Basic Biographical Details Name: | Angus Kennedy | Designation: | | Born: | Early 1800s | Died: | 27 November 1870 | Bio Notes: | Angus Kennedy was born probably in the first decade of the 19th century, the son of a cabinetmaker. He was probably apprenticed to his father but was later an iron turner and involved in loom machinery. Subsequently in c.1858 he commenced practice as architect and civil engineer at 21 Renfield Street, Glasgow. His practice was primarily industrial. He also operated as a commercial estate agent and was sometimes employed as an expert witness.
Kennedy married Isabella Dewar. They had a number of children, two sons becoming architects. He latterly took his son James (and possibly also Thomas, although he not descrobed as an architect until after his father's death) into partnership along with Andrew Myles (born c.1841), the practice title changing to Angus Kennedy, Son & Myles. He died suddenly at his office at 99 Bath Street on 27 November 1870. The firm retained its existing title until Myles departed to commence independent practice at 121 Wellington Street around the following year, whereafter James Kennedy continued the practice as Angus Kennedy & Son.
At some point James and Thomas would appear to have quarrelled as Thomas moved to Greenock where by 1881 he had set up in business as an architect. By 1891 he was back in Glasgow and employed as a clerk of works. The 1901 Census indicates that he had built up his business as he is described as ‘architect, employer’ at that date. He died on 13 January 1913.
