Basic Biographical Details Name: | Thomas Leverton Donaldson | Designation: | Architect | Born: | 17 October 1795 | Died: | 1 August 1885 | Bio Notes: | Thomas Leverton Donaldson was born at 8 Bloomsbury Square, London on 17 October 1795. He was the younger son of James Donaldson, architect (c.1756-1843) who was articled to Thomas Leverton in 1774 and married his niece Jane; he subsequently inherited the family estate of High Williamshaw, Ayrshire. Although of Scottish descent, his education was wholly English at the King Edward Grammar School, St Albans, with his father in London from age sixteen and at the Royal Academy Schools where he won the silver medal in 1817. He travelled in Italy and Greece from 1818 to 1823 and commenced independent practice in London the following year. He was first professor of architecture at University College 1842-1865 and emeritus professor from 1865 until his death on 1 August 1885. The statement in his obituary in the Kilmarnock Standard that he was born at High Williamshaw does not appear to be correct. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this architect: | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | London, England | Business | | | |
