He served in the Royal Engineers 51st division from August 1914 until February 1919, and later in the latter year commenced his studies at Robert Gordon's College, Aberdeen. On completion of his studies in 1922 he obtained a post with Aberdeen County Council in Ellon, where he remained until 15 November 1930 when he was appointed Architect to Sutherland County Council. He remained there thereafter, being appointed School Architect in 1937. He was admitted LRIBA on 10 July 1939, at which time he was living at 'St Andrews', Dornoch, Sutherland. His nomination papers state that the cost of the works for which he had been responsible prior to that date exceeded £100,000.
