Bio Notes: Robert Black was born in Shotts in about 1840. The Inverness Advertiser carried an advertisement on Tuesday, July 20, 1880 'Robert Black, land surveyor, architect & Government Inspector of Buildings, Drainage, etc, 23 Kingsmills Road.' He was admitted as a member of the Highland & Agricultural Society in 1883.

He was called upon to provide evidence in various trials. In 1899 he was called as a witness in the trial for murder of Allan Macallum in what the press described as the Abernethy Tragedy. He had drawn up a plan of the house for the Procurator Fiscal. Around this time he had offices in both Inverness and Orkney.

He later moved to Oakwood House in Roseneath Road in Inverness where he remained until 1905 when he was recorded by the Inverness Burgh directory "Robert Black, C.E., Oakwood"
