Basic Biographical Details | Name: | Charles Chree Doig | | Designation: | Architect | | Born: | 1855 | | Died: | Late 1918 | | Bio Notes: | Charles Chree Doig was born in Alyth in 1855 and went to Elgin in 1882 as assistant to H M S Mackay, land surveyor, quickly became a partner in the business, and extended it to civil engineering and architecture, specialising in distillery work, his practice in that field extending to Ireland. Doig's most noted achievement was the invention of a ventilator in 1889 which improved the efficiency of the chimneys at Daluaine Distillery Maltings; it was later known as the Doig Ventilator and used frequently elsewhere. It was highly practical as well as carefully designed in the 'golden ratio' and thus visually pleasing.
Of Doig's three sons, Major William H Doig and Charles James Doig became partners in the business. The former was taken prisoner in the First World War but survived. The third son, Alexander was a CA in the War Office, London.
Charles Chree Doig died of heart trouble following shooting on Dallas Moor on 28 September 1918. William died in 1947 and Charles in January 1975: in the 1950s he was responsible for some excellent housing in East Road and South College Street, Elgin, which won a Saltire award. The practice was taken over by Alister James Morrison in the 1950s as Alister J Morrison & Co, a title it retained until the 1990s, well after Morrison's death. The practice records were deposited in the Moray District Record Office in Forres in 1981 and transferred to Elgin Libraries in 1987. | Private and Business Addresses| The following private or business addresses are associated with this architect: | | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | Elgin, Morayshire, Scotland | Business | | | |
