Basic Biographical Details

Name: Robert Dalgarno
Designation:
Born:
Died: Before 1874
Bio Notes: Robert Dalgarno was born on 24 January 1790 at Maryton, Forfar, the son of Alexander Dalgarno, mason, and his wife Elizabeth Hill. They had married on 24 March 1797. Robert was presumably apprenticed to his father. He later practised in Duninald near Montrose. He seems to have had the patronage of the Kennedy-Erskine family and was employed as both builder and architect on a variety of buildings at Dun, including work the house and estate, the church and the parish school.

When Alexander Dalgarno fell ill with dysentery, Robert looked after his business. After Alexander's death it would appear that Robert returned to continue his own business which, apart from the work for the Dun estate, may have been largely designing and building houses, though it as yet unclear.

Robert Dalgarno died in Maryton, Angus on 20 January 1873 at the age of 82. He never married.
