Bio Notes: Robert Duncan was born about 1849 in Huntly, Aberdeenshire. He trained as a carpenter and practised as such in Huntly. He is recorded as a house carpenter journeyman in in 1871 when he was living with his widowed mother in Nelson Street. He married Susan Symon in the early 1870s. The couple had four daughters. However Susan died young at the age of 45 in 1894. Duncan remarried within a couple of years and by his second wife, Isabella, had two sons and a daughter.

Duncan began practising as an architect in the late 1870s and continued to do so through the 1880s and 1890s. However in 1891 he is recorded as being 'collector of taxes' as well as architect and by 1901 was 'collector and treasurer for the burgh'.
