He was a carpenter and builder and ran his business initially in Aboyne. In 1851 he was employing 7 men. His sons William (born 1838) and Alexander Eliezer (born 1850) joined him in business in 1868 the name of the firm becoming William Duguid & Sons at that point. The works was moved to Ballater at that point where 'large new premises' were erected. They described themselves as 'house carpenters, builders and licensed valuators'.
In 1875 they had premises at both Ballater and East Town of Tarland which seems to have been on the Haddo Estate.
William died on 17 November 1884 in Ballater (check).
