Bio Notes: James William Beaumont was born on 25 June 1848 and articled to Sir James Allanson Picton of Liverpool from 1865-69. He was assistant to Corson & Aitken of Manchester from 1870-1871 and commenced independent practice in Manchester in 1872.

J W Beaumont took his eldest son, William Somerville Beaumont into partnership from 1900, and and his fifth and youngest son John Somerville Beaumont from 1919 as J W Beaumont & Sons. This partnership continued until the formal retirement of J W Beaumont in 1930 and the death of William S Beaumont in 1943.

After the Second World War John Somerville Beaumont, took Raymond Cowling and James Harold Cheetham (retired 1964) into partnership with offices in Manchester, Sheffield and Warrington under the style J W Beaumont and Sons. The firm carried out some of the early post-war building at the Universities of Manchester and Sheffield in addition to new department stores in Sheffield.
