Basic Biographical Details

Name: Slater & Carpenter
Designation:
Born: 1863
Died: December 1872
Bio Notes: William Slater was born in 1818 or 1819. He was articled to Richard Cromwell Carpenter of London c.1835-40 and remained with him as an assistant. When Carpenter died in 1855, his principal clients arranged for Slater to take over the practice. Slater was admitted ARIBA on 19 November 1855 and FRIBA on 19 December 1859. His architecture tended to be more early Gothic with French influences in contrast to Carpenter's mid to late English Decorated, and in the 1850s and early-mid 1860s he was assisted by another Carpenter pupil, William Smith, later Bassett-Smith who left to commence practice on his own account in or before 1866.

In 1857 Slater took on as an articled pupil Carpenter's son, Richard Herbert Carpenter, born in July 1841 and educated at Charterhouse. He was taken into partnership in 1863 and was admitted ARIBA on 15 June of that year, his proposers being Slater, Mair and the St Pancras surveyor Henry Baker. Together they built Ardingly College and in 1868 the younger Carpenter redesigned his father's scheme for the chapel at Lancing as an immensely tall French cathedral-like edifice.

Slater died on 17 December 1872. Carpenter then took into partnership their chief assistant Benjamin Ingelow as Carpenter & Ingelow.
