Basic Biographical Details Name: | Arthur Bracewell | Designation: | | Born: | 1886 | Died: | 6 July 1953 | Bio Notes: | Arthur Bracewell was born in 1886. He was articled to William Rhodes Nunns in Bingley, Yorkshire from 1901 to 1906, studying at Keighley Technical & Art School. He presumably remained with Nunns as assistant after completing his apprenticeship, but took a short course at the Royal College of Art under William Richard Lethaby in 1908, and in the same year made a study tour of 'the eastern counties'. In 1911 he was taken into partnership by Nunns with offices in Bingley and Keighley, but the partnership was dissolved in 1915, presumably on account of the war.
Bracewell was admitted ARIBA in 1919, his sole proposer being Arthur Beresford Pite; at that time his address was Willowbank, Keighley. He commenced practice on his own account in 1922 and, probably in 1926, he moved to Tillicoultry, establishing himself at Middleton Mill where he designed and built an office for himself. He had been persuaded to come to Scotland by the proprietors of Middleton and Devonpark Mills in order to execute work for them. He subsequently moved to Oak Mill, Tillicoultry and divided his time between there and an office in the Garden City of Saltaire near Bradford. From the 1930s he designed mainly industrial buildings in Yorkshire and in Scotland and a number of public houses in West Yorkshire.
In 1952 his son Arthur Geoffrey Bracewell joined the practice, the name becoming Arthur Bracewell & Son. Both father and son held the post of Tillicoultry Burgh Architect. Arthur Bracewell died on 6 July 1953.
The subsequent history of the firm is outwith the scope of this dictionary but suffice to say the firm still practices today under the name Bracewell Stirling Architects. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | Oak Mill, Tillicoultry, Clackmannanshire, Scotland | Business | | | | | Saltaire, Yorkshire, England | Business | | | | | Bank Chambers, Bingley, West Yorkshire, England | Business | 1914 * | | | | Hillcrest, Bingley, West Yorkshire, England | Private | 1914 * | | | | Willowbank, Keighley, West Yorkshire, England | Private | Before 1919 | After 1926 | | | Middleton Mill, Tillicoultry, Clackmannanshire, Scotland | Business | 1926(?) | After 1950 | | | 38, Walker Terrace, Tillicoultry, Clackmannanshire, Scotland | Business | c. 1954 | | |
