Basic Biographical Details

Name: John Stephen
Designation:
Born: c. 1807
Died: 20 November 1850
Bio Notes: John Stephen was born c.1807. In 1833 or 1834 he and the civil engineer William Gale were taken into partnership by the much older Robert Scott, the practice title being Scott, Stephen & Gale. After Robert Scott died in April 1839 the surviving partners continued to practise under the same name until 1841 when they built Queen Street station. They must have separated thereafter, John Stephen carrying on practice on his own account while William Gale formed a new partnership with the Edinburgh architect David Cousin.

Stephen died of consumption on 20 November 1850 and was buried in Glasgow Necropolis (Lamba 180). His widow, Elizabeth Maclean, survived him. Gildard correctly described him as 'an architect of great promise [who] early taught us the elasticity of Greek architecture' and 'exercised his gifts as if he felt he was responsible for them'.
