Basic Biographical Details Name: | Henry ('Harry') Cook | Designation: | | Born: | 25 June 1880 | Died: | 27 October 1954 | Bio Notes: | Henry Cook, always known as Harry Cook, was born on 25 June 1880, the son of Archibald Cook, produce importer, and his wife Jane Martin. He was articled to Thomas Graham Abercrombie in 1897, concurrently studying at the Technical School and School of Design, Paisley. He commenced independent practice in the same town in either 1902 or 1904 (there being a discrepancy between the dates he gives on his two sets of RIBA nomination papers) and became a partner of James Craig Barr, a fellow apprentice of Abercrombie's, in the latter year.
Cook was an outstanding Beaux-Arts classical designer as can be seen at the North of Scotland Bank in Paisley, built in 1909-10, but no further commission on the same scale was to come his way. Around 1918 the partnership of Craig Barr & Cook was dissolved, and the following year Cook went into partnership with Andrew Hamilton, who had been principal assistant in Abercrombie's office, the new firm name being Cook & Hamilton. Cook was admitted LRIBA in late 1930 or early 1931, proposed by John Watson, George Arthur Boswell and the then secretary of the Glasgow Institute of Architects. He was elected FRIBA only a few months later, his proposers being Watson, Boswell and Andrew Graham Henderson.
By about 1950 Cook is described as retired. He died on 27 October 1954 at Westland Nursing Home, Paisley, survived by his wife, Eva Sarah Houldsworth Gardner, and at least one son. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | 5 (or 7?), Gilmour Street, Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland | Business | Before 1919 | 1939 or after 1940(?) | | | Cragroy|Cragory/41 or 39, Thornly Park Avenue, Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland | Private | Before 1930 | After 1931 | According to HS Cook lived at no 39 Thornly Park Avenue |
