Born: 30 September 1855

Bio Notes: Frank James Chambers Carruthers was born about 1856, the son of Francis Carruthers, farmer, Dixons, Tundergarth, Dumfriesshire. He was educated at Edinburgh Collegiate School from 1870 to 1876, thereafter spending about twelve months in the Estate office of Sir Robert Jardine, Bart. He then began an apprenticeship to William Hamilton Beattie, remaining there as draughtsman for two years. He travelled in Europe from time to time, and finally set up practice on his own account in c.1882 at Victoria Square, Lockerbie, living in some style at Dixons, Tundergarth with five servants. He married about 1892 and the couple had a son, also Francis, and two daughters. He moved his office to Dumfries in 1896.

He does not appear in Burke's Landed Gentry, although he may have been related to the Carruthers of Dormont. Hr should not be confused with Colonel F C Carruthers of Dormont who was his approximate contemporary.
