Basic Biographical Details

Name: J & T W Currie
Designation:
Born: Late 1903 or early 1904
Died:
Bio Notes: J & T W Currie practised in Elie, continuing the practice of John Currie who was born in 1840, the son of the architect-builder Thomas Currie of Elie, and was probably articled to his father. The quality of his best work suggests that he had experience with a leading architectural practice. From about 1862 he was presumably in partnership with his father as the business then became Thomas Currie & Sons. In 1870-71 he commenced independent practice at 5 St Andrew's Square, Edinburgh but this does not seem to have been a success as he appeared in the Post Office directory for the year 1870-71 only. He then returned to Elie to practise in his own name with his father as his principal client; he appears to be unrelated to the practice of John Currie & Sons which appeared briefly in the Glasgow Post Office directories at 80 Renfield Street Glasgow in 1877-78 as his sons could not have been old enough at that date.

Later in 1903 or very early in 1904 John Currie took his son Thomas William Currie into partnership, the practice name being J & T W Currie.

Alice Lorimer, the architect's sister, characterised Currie as 'a man of no taste or artistic training but had the very necessary quality of being sanguine and encouraging and more given to smoothing away difficulties than to magnify them.' He died on 25 September 1922. His moveable estate was only £464 1s 9d but like his father before him he probably owned significant property. His villa Claremont, built in 1897, suggests his practice had prospered.
