Name: Charles Walter Cossar
Designation:
Born: c. 1843

Bio Notes: Charles Walter Cossar (or Cosser), was born in about 1843 in Southampton, England, youngest known son of Serjeant Alexander Cosser of the Royal Engineers and his wife, Margaret Aqen. The family moved around, living in Ireland c.1827-1840, Wales in 1851, and Southampton in 1843.

Charles' father died when he was 12 years old, and it seems he also joined the Royal Engineers; he was a bugler in Kent in 1861. In 1870, at Banff, he married Mary Anne Bartlet Scott, daughter of James Scott and Helen Dick. The couple had four children, though two died in childhood. In 1871 Charles and his wife were living in Banff with his mother-law, Helen Dick, who by then was a widow and was working as a butcher His wife also died young, apparently in the 1870s.

From 1871 until at least 1911 Charles Cossar was practising as an architect and surveyor in Banff. In 1897 he was accused of assaulting a builder with whom he had a dispute about an account for work on the Royal Oak Hotel in Banff.

He died in Banff on 7 Jan 1915 at which time he is described as an 'Inspector of Poor'.
