Basic Biographical Details

Name: Charles Reid
Designation: Architect
Born: 1828
Died: 21 September 1883
Bio Notes: Charles Reid was born in 1828, the younger brother of Alexander Reid and William Reid who together inherited the practice of William Robertson of Elgin on his death on 12 June 1841. He was presumably articled to his brothers in or about the following year and at some point left them to gain wider experience. He became chief draughtsman with Brown & Wardrop in Edinburgh, and after Thomas Brown retired or died in 1872 or 1873 he was taken into partnership, the practice then taking the name of Wardrop & Reid. In 1876 they succeeded the ailing David Cousin as architects to the British Linen Bank.

Reid became senior partner when James Maitland Wardrop died in June 1882: either then or slightly earlier Wardrop's son Hew M Wardrop was taken into partnership but the practice title of Wardrop & Reid was retained. Reid died as a result of a fall on 21 September 1883, thereafter the younger Wardrop merged the practice with that of Robert Rowand Anderson and George Washington Browne as Wardrop, Anderson & Browne.
