He was a very able draughtsman who seems to have provided freelance architectural service to the engineering drawing office of Robertson & Orchar and to Robert Keith, both in Dundee, as and when required between 1873 and 1878. He commenced independent practice at 61 Reform Street Dundee, in 1871-72. His main client seems to have been James Gentle. He also designed a church at Sinclairtown, Kirkcaldy in his own name. He subsequently worked from an office at 35 Albert Square.
