Name: George M Hobkirk
Designation:
Born: 1884
Died: 1970
Bio Notes: George M Hobkirk was born 1884, the son of Thomas Hobkirk, joiner and his wife Mary. The family had a carpentry and joinery business and undertook some architectural work at the same time. George appears to have been responsible for the design of some buildings by about 1905 when he submitted drawings to the Hawick Dean of Guild under his own name. He may have been articled to and served as assistant to James Pearson Alison in the first decade of the twentieth century. In 1913 he is thought to have been the designer of St George's Church, though he must still have been an assistant at this stage. He was taken into partnership by Alison by at least 1923 when the first note of the name J P Alison and Hobkirk appears in the Dean of Guild records in October of that year. The partnership conitnued until Alison's death on 19 November 1932. He died in 1970. No further information is known about Hobkirk. The firm of Aitken & Turnbull is the successor to the J P Alison & Hobkirk practice.
