He was taken into partnership by his father under the practice title of William Spence & Son c.1877. His father retired in 1880 and the business was carried on by Henry Field Spence as William Spence & Son with Henry Field Spence as sole partner. Although some sources state that the practice was William Spence & Sons and that Spence's younger son, John William Spence, born 1856, was also involved, newspaper sources show that it Henry Field Spence was the only partner with his father. Also Census records show that John William Spence was a merchant drysalter and later chemical manufacturer.
In 1881 Henry Field Spence is recorded as living in Glasgow.
