Basic Biographical Details Name: | Rodney Broad | Designation: | | Born: | 22 June 1904 | Died: | | Bio Notes: | Rodney Broad was born on 22 June 1904 and was articled to Lyle & Constable in August 1920, studying at Heriot-Watt College. On completing his apprenticeship in March 1925 he secured employment as junior assistant to the chief architect of the British Aluminium Company, working on sketch plans and drawings for the Lochaber Hydro-Electric Scheme. He left that office in December 1929 to take up an appointment in H M Office of Works, where he was principally engaged on post offices and telephone exchanges.
Broad passed the Design section of Part I of the RIBA exams in London in July 1936, followed by the remaining subjects in December the same year. Soon afterwards he emigrated to Singapore where in April 1937 he was appointed senior architectural assistant to the Chief Engineer of the RAF Singapore, designing and superintending aerodrome construction. He passed Part II of the RIBA exams in Singapore in July 1937, and was admitted ARIBA on 9 May 1938, Arthur James Scott Hutton being among his proposers (the signatures of the other two appear indecipherable). In 1938-39 he appears as working for the Directorate of Works, RAF Base, Selatar, Singapore, Straits Settlement. He does not appear in later directories.
