Basic Biographical Details

Name: Hugh Peebles
Designation:
Born: 24 August 1894
Died: 25 January 1983
Bio Notes: Hugh Peebles was born on 24 August 1894 and studied at the technical school in Kilmarnock from May 1911 to August 1914. Whilst there, according to his LRIBA nomination papers, he worked as junior assistant to 'the late J Ingraeme, Architect (This practice ceased to exist during the War Years owing to the death of the Principal)'; presumably he was in fact referring to Robert Samon Ingram, who was in partnership with David Morton Brown at that time until his death in 1915.

Peebles served with the armed forces at home and oversees from the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914 until March 1919. The month after his demobilisation he joined John Saunders of Newark, Nottinghamshire as third assistant, thereafter being promoted to second assistant and finally in 1924 to chief assistant. Whilst there he studied at the Science and Art School in the town from 1919 to 1923.

He left Saunders' office in May 1927 to take up an appointment as chief assistant to the Borough of Newark, working under J H Clarke AMICE. He was still there when he was admitted LRIBA on 16 October 1945, his proposers being Ernest Frear, Evan Wendall Roberts and Henry Hardwick Dawson, all of Nottingham. By that time he had been worked on municipal offices, housing schemes, a municipal library, an isolation hospital, and 'general adaptations and extensions etc. to Council Buildings' in the borough.

Peebles died of broncho-pneumonia at Hawtonville Hospital on 25 January 1983. His death was reported to the RIBA by his niece Joan M Gardiner, who stated that his wife Frances had predeceased him some nine years earlier, and that they had had no children.
