He joined the office of James B Nicol as an apprentice in July 1932 whilst continuing to study until he obtained his diploma in June 1934. He was still in Nicol's office, presumably as an assistant, when he was admitted ARIBA in mid-1935, his proposers being Nicol, Robert Leslie Rollo and John Gibb Marr.
Thomson formed a partnership with Robert McKinlay in Lusaka in Northern Rhodesia. It is not yet clear if they were already in partnership before they went abroad. The partnership was of short duration, though both partners remained in Africa. Thomson retired to Malta about 1970. He is still listed in the RIBA Directory for 1994. He was still living in Malta. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | 39, Richmondhill Road, Aberdeen, Scotland | Private | 1935 * | | | | Charter House, Ndola, Zimbabwe (Southern Rhodesia to | Business | 1950s * | After 1964 | Northern Rhodesia | | PO Box 615, Ndola, Zimbabwe (Southern Rhodesia to | Business | 1970 * | | Northern Rhodesia | | Post Restante, GPO, Valetta, Malta | Private | 1979 * | | | | 26, The Strand, Kalkara, Malta | Private | 1988 | After 1994 | |
