Basic Biographical Details

Name: Archibald George Jury
Designation: Architect
Born: 23 June 1907
Died: 25 February 2003
Bio Notes: Archibald George Jury was born in Devon on 23 June 1907, the son of George John Jury, slerk of works, and his wife, Mabel Sophie Fisher. He was articled to F W Beech of Messrs Ellis Son & Bowden of Exeter in June 1923 and during that period attended part-time courses at the Royal Albert Memorial College in that town. He also studied privately and altogether spent four years training in the diciplines of architecture and surveying.

In or about 1927 he moved to Middlesborough as a junior assistant to Stephen H Clarke. In September 1928 he transferred to the office of Samual Edwin Burgess, the borough engineer, where he worked as an assistant, remaining there for seven years. During this time he worked on housing schemes, schools and other public buildings. In January 1936 he took the post of Deputy Borough Architect in Gravesend in Kent where he was responsible for the new open air swimming pool, schools, housing amongst other projects, and moved again in January 1938 to become Borough Architect in Taunton, Somerset. During this period he was a visiting lecturer at evening classes at one or more unspecified Technical College. He applied for admission to the RIBA in January 1940 and about the same time volunteered for the Royal Engineers where he was in the Works Services Branch and also served as senior technical instructor in the Construction Wing of the School of Military Engineering. He was elected ARIBA in April 1940, his proposers being Henry Spencer Walcott Stone, Robert Ridley Kitching and Richard James Archibald. His work in Taunton was varied ranging from the conversion of large houses and a War Department hospital into flats as well as numerous pre- and post-war permanent housing schemes.

After being discharged at the rank of Major from the Royal Engineers in February 1945 Jury returned to Taunton, but in November 1946 he moved to the post of Chief Housing Architect .in the Department of Architecture & Housing in the City of Liverpool under Sir Lancelot Keay's administration. Whist in Liverpool he was admitted FRIBA, his proposers this time being Kitching, Stone and another.

In January 1949 Jury moved to Glasgow to take up the post of Director of Housing. In October 1950 the General Finance Committee recommended that Mr Jury be appointed to the newly established post of City Architect and Planning Officer (for Glasgow), but the Glasgow Corporation did not accept this, wishing to advertise the post to test the market. Following this Mr Jury was appointed Director of Planning and first City Architect at a salary of £2,500 in February 1951. Although in 1955 the post of Director of Planning was hived off, Jury remained City Architect until his retirement in 1972.

Jury was appointed CBE in the New Year’s Honours list of 1961. He held numerous honorary post including President of the Glasgow Institute of Architect and was Vice President of the RIAS during the two years before he retired. He resigned from the RIBA in 1975. At that time he was living in Alloway.

Jury died aged 95 at Lochduhar Nursing Home, Dumfries on 25 February 2003. His wife Amy Beatrice Maw, had predeceased him. His grandson David D Barbour, registered his death.
