Bio Notes: Alexander MacGregor was born about 1803 or 1804, the son of Alexander MacGregor, joiner, and his wife Jean Kilgour. He was a pupil and principal clerk of William Burn - described as 'dark, Seceder-looking' in a letter to the Duke of Buccleuch when he submitted a design for the Houses of Parliament in 1834. He commenced practice on his own account about 1835, initally in Howe Street, then Duncan Street, moving to 10 Forres Street two years later. In 1853-54 he moved to 3 North Charlotte Street, which was house as well as office. From c.1863 he was in partnership with ____ Millar.

He died on 4 August 1868, leaving £98 16s 9d. His wife was Jessie D Kilgour. They had three daughters, though the middle one died in childhood. In 1861 his nephew Alex Heron was was an apprentice and living in the house in North Charlotte Street. He continued the practice after his uncle's death, remaining in North Charlotte Street for some years but moving to Bread Street by 1881.
