Basic Biographical Details

Name: Charles Edward
Designation: Architect
Born: 1816
Died: 8 March 1890
Bio Notes: Charles Edward was born at Tealing in 1816, trained as a builder, became clerk of works and finally an architect, his earliest work being in a late Georgian survival manner. He was an assistant to the Dundee architect David Smith and then moved to Glasgow 'where he had considerable experience'. He returned to Dundee and on Smith's death in 1845 he took over Smith's practice on behalf of Smith's wife. The year after he took over the practice he completed and published a survey plan of the town of Dundee which had been begun by Smith. The plan included 'all the improvements and additions of the last twenty-five years'.

He later practised in Dundee in partnership with Thomas Saunders Robertson from at least April 1859 when Edward & Robertson advertised for contractors for Rathillet UP Church.

Edward was involved in municipal affairs and served as Dean of Guild from 1877-1881. In his later years Edward travelled a great deal including a visit to Egypt. He died on 8 March 1890 at Rock Lodge (later Forbes Court) West Ferry, leaving moveable estate of 2,767 0s 3d. He was survived by his son Alfred S Edward (1852-1915) who was a painter, working in London from c.1879.
