Basic Biographical Details Name: | George Rhind | Designation: | | Born: | 1813(?) | Died: | 15 March 1886 | Bio Notes: | George Rhind was born in 1813, the son of the architect builder John Rhind and his wife Helen Dingwall. Some time before 1836 he married Isabella Milne in Banffshire, and there his eldest son John was born. In 1840 he was described as a mason at Dochfour and in 1842 an inspector of works, probably working for Joseph Mitchell. By that date he had already commenced independent practice and was living at Castle Street in Inverness. In 1844 he was still an inspector at that address, but by 1851 he had commenced business as an architect and builder with an address in Shore Street.
A report in the 'Inverness Courier' of 1 April 1846 tells that when a fire broke out in the Athenaeum buildings in Hamilton Place, Inverness who had charge of various improvements and alterations in the building, possessed a thorough knowledge of the premises' and was therefore able to guide the firemen to extinguishing the flames.
Around 1862 his son John returned from Campbell Douglas & Stevenson's office in Glasgow and took over the architectural side of the business, George being mainly concerned with contracting work thereafter.
George Rhind died on 15 March 1886 at the age of seventy-three. He was survived by his wife Isabella who lived on until 21 December 1894. They had a large family which in addition to John included George Junior who became a carpenter and was later harbour superintendent at Helmsdale from 1893-98 and later contractor in Helmsdale; William, a mason, born 23 June 1840, died 9 March 1878; Helen, born 15 June 1842; Alexander born 29 February 1844; Isabella Ann, born 14 March 1851, who married Alexander Hogg, civil engineer, Ontario, in 1885; and James Robert, architect, baptised 11 October 1853.
