Basic Biographical Details

Name: Cameron & Burnett
Designation: Architectural practice
Started: Late 1895 or early 1896
Ended: 1921
Bio Notes: Cameron & Burnett were the leading hotel architects in the Highland area, practising from Inverness and working mainly for the Highland Railway or companies associated with it. Nothing is known as yet of their professional training. The founding partner, Duncan Cameron took J Russell Burnett into partnership late in 1895 or early in 1896 but died in 1899; J Russell Burnett retained the practice name and died in 1921. At the Highlands Hotel, Fort William Cameron was one of the earliest Scottish architects to adopt the hydropathic formula of a hotel standing with extensive private grounds rather than on a street. The later hotels at Mallaig, Dornoch, Strathpeffer and Fort Augustus generally follow the same formula but are harled with half-timbered gables and sometimes brick rather than stone dressings.
