Bio Notes: Charles Brand was born about 1805 in Fordoun, Kincardineshire. In the 1840s he worked as a builder and contractor but by 1851 he was in Glasgow working as a builder. By 1861 he had returned to his native Fordoun and practised there until at least 1884. He was both a builder and also held the tenancy of Farm Mains of Fordoun.

He died at Foudoun House on 8 January 1885. His early Gothic churches were somewhat primitive in style but his later Blackhall Castle had a dour granite competence.
