Basic Biographical Details Name: | Lake Falconer (junior) | Designation: | | Born: | 16 June 1882 | Died: | February 1940 | Bio Notes: | Lake Falconer Junior was the son of the elder architect of the same name, and was born in Blairgowrie on 16 June 1882. He was the fourth child and third son of the ten children of Lake senior. Lake junior was educated at Dundee High School and University College, Dundee. He was an apprentice in the family firm's Blairgowrie office under Lake Senior from 1898 to 1902, remaining there as assistant and subsequently chief assistant until 1910 when he moved to Oban to take charge of James Grewar Falconer's branch office there. James Falconer in due course bought out the practice of George Woulfe Brenan after the latter's retirement, though the precise date of this is not known. Lake Falconer junior was admitted LRIBA on 24 June 1912, his proposers being the Aberdeen architects John Ross McMillan, Arthur Hay Livingstone Mackinnon and George Watt.
During the First World War Lake Junior served with the Royal Artillery in Egypt, Palestine and Syria, being promoted Captain in 1916 and Major in 1918, commanding no 11 and no 13 Mountain Batteries, no 181st Heavy Battery, and the 95th Heavy brigade. After the war he commanded the Argyll Battery (TA) from 1924 to 1929. One of his favourite recreations was rifle shooting and he gained many trophies in competitions. He married Catherine Johnston, daughter of Thomas Johnston of Maxwell Park, Glasgow, in 1922.
At the outbreak of World War II Falconer was appointed Commandant of the Oban special constables.
Falconer died 7 February 1940. He had been on his way to Barra where he had a job building a house for the RNLI for their mechanic. Just as the boat left Tiree he collapsed and died on a heart attack. He was survived by his wife and daughter and son, also Lake, who became a solicitor and practised in Oban until his retirement in 1989.
