Basic Biographical Details

Name: Adam & Short
Designation:
Born: Before 1894
Died: 1897(?)
Bio Notes: Alexander Adam was born in 1864, the son of William Adam, an ironmaster from Bainsford in Stirlingshire and his wife Catherine Ballantyne (or Valentine as on death certificate). He was articled to Bruce & Hay c.1880, subsequently joining first Baird & Thomson and then the Saracen Ironworks as a draughtsman. He studied at Glasgow School of Art for one session only from November 1887, and was then living at 56 Cavendish Street. Some time thereafter he moved to Dublin as leading draughtsman to Kay & Paterson but was back in Glasgow by 1891 commencing independent practice at 95 Bath Street in the following year.

By 1894 Adam had formed a partnership with John Short. Short had been born c. 1867, the son of David Short, builder and Jessie McCulloch. It is not known to which practice he had been articled and he had not studied at Glasgow School of Art: he may have been apprenticed to his father as a builder.

Adam & Short specialised in tenement design, but the partnership was dissolved by 1897, apparently as a result of Short's alcoholism. Both partners continued to practise separately thereafter, but Short died only two years later.

[NB: 'Buildings of Scotland' has this firm listed as John 'Smart' and also notes an Adam Short for the Partickhill tenements near Gardner Street which should presumably be Adam & Short.]
