Basic Biographical Details Name: | Edward Calvert | Designation: | | Born: | March 1847 | Died: | 26 June 1914 | Bio Notes: | Edward Calvert was born in Brentford Middlesex in March 1847, the son of William Calvert, corn and coal dealer, and his wife Esther Roberts. He was probably articled to Frederick Thomas Pilkington, whose correspondence with the papermakers John and Charles Cowan of Penicuik refers to an assistant named Calvert, but no forename is given.
Calvert's practice was exclusively domestic, substantially dependent on the builder Peter Craig Renton and, so far as is known, confined to Edinburgh. His career began with a plain baronial tenement at Cowgatehead in 1871 with no known work for the next six years. It therefore seems probable that he continued to assist Pilkington & Bell until about 1878 when he became surprisingly busy despite the deep recession following the failure of the City of Glasgow Bank in that year. His baronial tenements in Marchmont have a marked originality of detail but his best work is seen in the large villas he built at Merchiston for Renton. These are symmetrical and ashlar-fronted, an elegant amalgam of mixed Pilkingtonian Second Empire detail with a particular fondness for stilted segmental arches and incised ornaments. His work in the 1890s is less ornamental with free Jacobean motifs.
Calvert married to Lucy ___ in the late 1870s and they had at least one son.
Calvert died at his home, Perciville, 80 Willowbrae Road, Edinburgh on 26 June 1914 at the age of sixty-six, leaving moveable estate of £1,594 10s 7d. He was buried at Grange Cemetery. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | Perciville/80, Willowbrae Road, Edinburgh, Scotland | Private | * | 1914 | | | 3, Blackwood Crescent, Edinburgh, Scotland | Private/business(?) | Before 1871 | After 1873 | | | 5, East Newington Place, Edinburgh, Scotland | Business | 1874 | 1877 | | | 10, North St Andrew Street, Edinburgh, Scotland | Business | 1878 | 1880 | | | 9, North st Andrew Street, Edinburgh, Scotland | Business | 1881 | 1889 | | | 1, Willowbrae Villas, Edinburgh, Scotland | Private | Before 1881 | After 1884 | May be same as Perciville. | | 10, North st Andrew Street, Edinburgh, Scotland | Business | 1890 | 1899 | | | 16, North St Andrew Street, Edinburgh, Scotland | Business | 1900 | 1914 | |
