Basic Biographical Details

Name: Richard Turner
Designation:
Born:
Died:
Bio Notes: This is probably the Richard Turner who established the Hammersmith Ironworks in Dublin in 1834 and quickly specialised in the design of conservatories and heating chambers; beginning with the Botanic Gardens Palm House in Belfast in 1839 which was designed by Charles Lanyon. Thereafter he largely made his own designs from 1843 onwards, the first being the Royal Dublin Society's Palm House at Glasnevin in 1843. He achieved an international reputation with the Palm House at Kew, designed with Decimus Burton and built in 1845-48. In 1855 he proposed a cast-iron Channel Tunnel and in or about 1861 his architect son Thomas Turner established branch offices in Belfast, Glasgow and Hamilton which were initially at least partly concerned with the supply and construction of his father's conservatories. From 1872 the younger Turner was based only in Belfast and by 1883 had returned to Dublin; by those dates his father's conservatory building activities had come to an end, no major public commissions being recorded after 1850.
