Basic Biographical Details

Name: William Baird
Designation:
Born: 1834
Died: 20 January 1884
Bio Notes: William Baird was an architect and coalmaster in Airdrie, Lanarkshire. He was born in about 1834, the son of Alexander Baird, master joiner, and his wife, Martha Maccaulay. In 1851 he is described as an 'architect's clerk'. He formed a partnership with George Arthur, who had been born in Airdrie in 1849 and had served his apprenticeship with James Thomson in the same town before joining Baird's practice. Baird's interest proved ephemeral as he was also involved with the family coal business and Arthur was effectively in charge of the business of Baird & Arthur from 1871. From 1884 Arthur was practising solely on his own account. Willaim Baird died intestate on 20 August 1884.

William Baird had two sons who were architects: Alexander who was born in 1860 and William who was born in 1864.
