Basic Biographical Details Name: | Gabriel Andrew | Designation: | | Born: | 28 October 1851 | Died: | 3 July 1933 | Bio Notes: | Gabriel Andrew was born on 28 January 1851, the son of Alexander Andrew, master joiner. He was a pupil of William Railton and commenced business on his own account in Kilmarnock in 1875. He took William Newlands (born 1853) into partnership in 1880 as Andrew & Newlands. Newlands left the practice in 1889 due to ill health, spending several years in Cape Town and expecting never to return, but by 1895 he had recovered and had returned to Kilmarnock and to the partnership with Andrew. Around this date Gabriel became the 'retained architect' of Johnnie Walker & Sons. The firm's work in the late 1890s and early 1900s is quite an imaginative free Baroque.
Newlands suffered another bout of ill health around 1910, retiring from practice for eighteen months, but by the beginning of 1912 he had once more recommenced business, seemingly alone.
Andrew died at his home, Lochlea, 38 Kay Park Crescent, Kilmarnock on 3 July 1933, at the age of eighty-one. He left moveable estate of £2,066 8s 3d. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | Wellington Street, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland | Business | | | | | Lochlea/38, Kay Park Crescent, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland | Private | | 1933 | | | 9, East George Street, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland | Business | 1875 | 1883 | | | Croft Street, Ayrshire, Scotland | Business | 1883 | | In Messrs John Walker & Son's premises in Croft Street (Kilmarnock Standard) | | Croft Street, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland | Business | 1895 | | Office within the Johnnie Walker office which he himself had designed | | 84, Portland Street, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland | Business | Before 1900 | | | | 37, Bank Street, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland | Business | 1902 | | Office within Johnnie Walker building, designed by Andrew. |
